Father arrested on charges in infant son’s death
A former Kansas City resident was arrested this morning after being charged in connection with his infant son’s death, which happened nearly two years ago.
Dontez M. Jenkins, 27, of Springfield is charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
On Oct. 14, 2007, police were dispatched to Jenkins’ home in the 2400 block of Chelsea Avenue and found 2½-month-old Donte Jenkins dead in his crib.
Dontez Jenkins told police that Donte’s mother put the baby to bed face-down in the crib as she usually did. Jenkins said he woke up and checked on Donte at 5:40 a.m. and found him unresponsive, so he called an ambulance.
In February 2008, the Jackson County medical examiner’s office ruled Donte’s death a homicide caused by smothering and other blunt-force injuries, according to a police report.
