A substitute teacher has been accused of sexually abusing his 13-year-old adopted daughter, according to Maricopa County Superior Court documents.

The 51-year-old Avondale resident was indicted on Sept. 30 on one count each of sexual abuse, a Class 3 dangerous felony, and child molestation, a Class 2 dangerous felony, and two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, a Class 2 dangerous felony, records show. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Oct. 15.

The Republic is withholding the man's name to protect the identity of the victim.

The man was arrested Sept. 23 after his daughter told a school counselor that he had fondled and molested her on at least two occasions between July 15 and Sept. 16, according to court documents. She said he came into her bedroom on nights her mother worked late. The girl said her father told her not to tell anyone, but she went to the counselor because she didn't want it to happen again, documents show.

The man admitted touching the girl inappropriately but said he was trying to teach her about sex offenders and sexual abuse, records state.

The man works as a substitute teacher, primarily at Avondale elementary schools, according to court documents. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 19.
