MADIKERI: Four members of a family consumed poison in a bid to end their lives, but ended up in a hospital at Mangalore. Though the parents are
recovering, their two children are fighting for life in the ICU.

According to police, Vijayakumar (45), a native of Sullya and resident of Madikeri, decided to end his life due to his illness and also because he couldn't repay his debts. On Wednesday night, he mixed poison in the food and served it to his wife Pramila (35), children Nishmita (8) and Tashmitha (6 and a half years).

Eight year old Nishmita told the doctor at the hospital that when the poison did not work, her father woke them up at 3 am on Thursday and forced them to drink poison, even when they said no. The second dose worked on them and all of them began to suffer.

Vijayakumar had left a letter stating that he couldn't look after the family due with the burdens of ill health and debts and so he had decided to commit suicide and kill the members of family.

He called his brother-in-law and told him that they consumed poison, after which they were immediately rushed to a Madikeri hospital. After the first aid, they were shifted to Mangalore Wenlock hospital.

Dr Raghavendra Bhat at Wenlock hospital said the parents were out of danger and the children are being kept under observation. Police have registered a case against Vijayakumar, according to the his brother-in-law's complaint.

Vijayakumar is a bus driver in Mangalore and said in his letter that he cannot work there anymore.
