GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The father of the boy whose body was found in a kudzu patch in August 2007 has pleaded guilty to killing the boy.

Christopher Wilson entered the plea during a hearing in a Greenville County courtroom on Monday.

Wilson was charged with homicide by child abuse in connection with the death of his 4-year-old son, Javeion Mayes.

Investigators have said that Mayes drown on Aug. 7, 2007, and then Wilson put his body in duffel bag. They said that Wilson then dumped the bag in the kudzu patch not far from his home. His body was found by search crews the next day.

Police have said that Wilson called authorities and reported his son missing on the same day, which prompted a massive search of the nearby area. Wilson had said that he awoke to find Mayes was missing.

During the hearing on Monday, Wilson apologized to his family and said that it is something he will have to live with the rest of his life.

Mayes' uncle, Reginald Mayes, said that he finally feels like the family has closure and that justice was served.

Wilson was sentenced to the minimum of 25 years in prison. He also entered a guilty to plea to an unrelated assault charge that stems from an incident that happened while he was in jail on the homicide charge. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for that charge to be served concurrently with the 25-year sentence.
