Halifax man charged with shaking baby

Sat. Jun 26 - 4:53 AM
A Halifax man faces aggravated assault charges in connection with injuries his two-month-old son received overnight Thursday.

Police said Friday the 27-year-old man was charged after doctors believed the baby’s injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The man and the mother of the child took the baby to the IWK Health Centre sometime before police were called in at 1:50 a.m. Friday, said Const. Brian Palmeter, spokesman for the Halifax Regional Police.

The baby is expected to make a full recovery, said Palmeter, who wasn’t sure if the child had been released back to his mother later Friday.

The man, whose name has not been released because the information against him has yet to be sworn, is out on conditions not to have contact with the child, Palmeter said.

The child remains in the care of the mother, who does not face any charges in connection with the incident, he said.

The accused will appear in Halifax provincial court on Aug. 23.
