A Coon Rapids man accused of shaking his 5-month-old daughter and causing bleeding on her brain, may face murder charges after the baby died Sunday, the Anoka County sheriff's office said.

The baby died Sunday around 11:30 p.m.

Her father, Joshua Allen VanHoutan, 25, was charged Friday with assault and malicious punishment of a child.

Anoka County sheriff's Cmdr. Paul Sommer said in an email that murder charges are likely against VanHoutan, who remains in custody at Anoka County Jail.

The Anoka County attorney's office will decide whether to bring any new charges.

Coon Rapids police were called to Mercy Hospital Wednesday on a report of a possibly shaken baby.

The baby's mother, Tina Ginter, told police the baby had been sleeping in their home in the 12000 block of Flamingo Street Northwest when she left for work about 4 a.m. Ginter said VanHoutan called her about 9 a.m. to say "something was wrong" with the baby and called again an hour later to say that the baby would not wake up and that "her arms would flail," according to the criminal complaint filed in Anoka County District Court.

Ginter left work and took the baby to Mercy Hospital. The infant was admitted about 12:30 p.m. and was diagnosed with retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding on her brain. After being transferred to Children's, she underwent surgery to alleviate pressure inside her skull.

VanHoutan voluntarily told an Anoka County detective that the baby awakened between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

After intially denying that he hurt the baby, he later said he shook the baby twice because she would not calm down, the complaint said.

VanHoutan said that after the baby cried briefly, she settled down. He then laid her down in her crib, where she continued to whine, the complaint said.

While in custody, VanHoutan told authorities he shook the baby about 6:30 and noticed about two hours later that her body was limp and that she had trouble keeping her eyes open, the complaint said.
