GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - Gwinnett County police said a man left his infant daughter in the woods after an argument he had with his girlfriend.

The child was wearing thin pajamas, and paramedics found her face down along a path.

Rayvon Gray's family does not deny he left the child in the woods, but called it a mistake and said there is much more to this story.

Tamara Leverett is thankful her grand-daughter Rayvon, who's named after her father, is all smiles today.

That wasn't the case Monday after Gray and his girlfriend got into a fight that ended with the little girl being left in the woods.

Leverett doesn't excuse her son's behavior, but swears he wouldn't hurt his child.

"He didn't hurt her. He can't, he wouldn't, he never has," said Leverett.

Leverett said her son loves his daughter, and has cared for her since birth.
"I'm not defending my son. I'm just saying it's a lie that he would harm his daughter," said a tearful Leverett.

Gwinnett County police accuse Gray of leaving his daughter alone in the woods while he fled from officers.

"It's pretty bad. Outside of physically striking the child, this is the next worst thing," said public information officer Cpl. Jake Smith.

According to the police report, Gray left the child in the woods, which is yards from the home.

The family said what the police report doesn't say, is that Gray wrapped the child in his jacket and called his mother to tell her where he had left the child.

But investigators said those facts don't change the case.

As far as officers are concerned, when they found the child, the dad was no were to be found.

Gray remains behind bars.

His mother hopes and prays that he will learn a serious lesson from this incident.
