...CROWN POINT | A Hammond man charged with murder in the shooting of his young son was booked Wednesday into the Lake County Jail.

Jason DeGroot Sr. is accused of shooting his 10-year-old son, Jason DeGroot Jr., in the back before turning the gun on himself, according to an affidavit filed Tuesday in Lake Superior Court.

A spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department on Thursday said DeGroot Sr., who had been listed in critical condition, now is in good condition and under medical care at the jail.

DeGroot, 32, initially was treated at a Hammond hospital before being moved to an unnamed facility in Illinois, police said. He is believed to have been released into Cook County police custody before being booked Wednesday in Lake County.

It was unclear Thursday when DeGroot is scheduled for an initial hearing in the case.

A roommate found the DeGroots in bed, covered in blood, about 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at their home in the 4000 block of Torrence Avenue, according to the affidavit.

An autopsy by the Lake County coroner's office estimated the boy had been dead for 36 to 48 hours prior to the discovery.

Investigators said they found a .38-caliber handgun in a dresser next to the bed where the DeGroots were discovered.

When DeGroot Sr. was hospitalized and being treated for a gunshot wound to his chest, blood was discovered on the bottom of his feet, the affidavit states.

A bloodied obituary for Brandy DeGroot, the defendant's late wife, was found behind the headboard of the bed where the father and son were discovered, according to the affidavit.
