Dad charged with manslaughter in death of 3-month-old daughter (Gillespie, Illinois)

How do you "accidentally" stuff a baby wipe in an infant's mouth? I call bullsh**. Daddy is identified as RICHARD C. MORGAN JR. Was there a mother in this home? No mention of one.

GILLESPIE - The father of a 3-month-old girl who died in November stands charged with involuntary manslaughter, accused of unintentionally causing the child's death by placing a baby wipe in her mouth.

A grand jury in Macoupin County returned a bill of indictment on Monday against Richard C. Morgan Jr., 27, of the 200 block of East Elm Street in Gillespie. The Illinois State Police announced an arrest in the case on Tuesday.

Morgan was being held in Macoupin County Jail on bond of $100,000.

The death of Nevaeh M. Morgan is being jointly investigated by agents of the Gillespie Police Department and the Illinois State Police. The charge is worded to reflect that the death was unintentional but that Morgan was acting in a reckless manner at the time.

Macoupin County State's Attorney Jennifer Watson said the death is alleged to have occurred at Morgan's home, but the break in the case is credited to an area hospital that contacted authorities about the child's death.

The child was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, in Montgomery County. Coroner Rick Broaddus was not available for comment on Wednesday.

Illinois State Police also were not immediately available.

Although the incident occurred on Nov. 23, agents spent several weeks "in the normal course of investigation," she said.

Other than saying a baby wipe is the cause of the death, Watson declined to be more specific because the case is pending.
