PRINCESS ANNE — A Princess Anne man whose infant children were observed by police home alone near hot stoves is wanted for criminal child neglect and related offenses.

Darren James Tingle, 25, was hiding in an outbuilding at a residence on McCormick Swamp Road when Maryland State Police investigators located him earlier this week to serve an unrelated warrant issued by the Princess Anne Police Department. Inside the residence, investigators found a 1-year child “walking around hysterical” within 3 feet of a cooking stove in which the oven was set at 400 degrees to warm the residence, according to the MSP. The oven door was open, police said.

In a living room, investigators found a 5-month-old in a bouncing chair and nearby a free-standing electric oil heater that was “hot to the touch,” MSP said.

Investigators said the children, who Tingle said were his, had been in the house unattended about 8 minutes.

MSP Cpl. Robert Lambden said Friday that Tingle was taken into custody and released on bond for the warrant issued for violation of probation.

Following up observations by investigators regarding the unattended children, MSP issued a warrant for Tingle’s arrest, Lambden said.

He is also charged with reckless endangerment and child abuse.

Anyone with information about Tingle’s whereabouts should contact MSP in Princess Anne at 443-260-3700, or to remain anonymous, call 443-260-3737.
