Hollywood toddler tried to protect mother during beating, police say

 Report says two-year-old child intervened as his mother was being beaten

A 2-year-old Hollywood boy wedged himself between his parents early Monday in an attempt "to protect his mother" as his father sat atop her and slammed her face into the ground, police said.

Henry Valladares Matamoros, 27, was arrested for domestic violence and ordered held on $131,000 bail during his hearing in first appearance court Tuesday. It was unclear whether the child was harmed during the alleged beating.

Police say the ordeal began about 3 a.m. Monday when Matamoros threatened to use a knife to kill Mirna Perez, the woman he has lived with for nine years and the mother of his two children.

In the attack at their home in the 2400 block of North 59th Avenue, Matamoros attempted to strangle Perez and squeezed her neck to the point that she started to black out, according to the police report.

Matamoros is also accused of hitting the woman with a belt throughout her body.

Perez tried to escape through the front door, but Matamoros restrained her for 10 hours, kicking the phone away from her each time she tried to call 911 for help, police said.

He also threw a beverage can at Perez, grabbed her arms, pulled her hair and held her down to keep her from escaping, according to the report. Perez was finally able to contact police when Matamoros left the home about 1 p.m. Monday, police said.

Matamoros told police that he and Perez had been arguing and began pushing each other. He admitted to hitting her with the belt that was on the living room floor when police arrived.

At police headquarters, officers noted that Perez needed medical attention for injuries including bruises on her stomach, hips, legs, both arms and chin. She also had a scratch on her neck, police said. Hollywood-Fire Rescue tended to those injuries at the station.

Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley ordered during Tuesday's hearing that Matamoros have no contact with Perez or the young boy.

"The court's also concerned with the emotional damage done to the 2-year-old by witnessing his mother get strangled and beaten to the point that he attempted to rescue his mother," Hurley said. "The court believes you represent a danger not only to Ms. Perez but to the 2-year-old."

Matamoros was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, simple battery, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and depriving of means to protect or communication.

In 2010, Matamoros was arrested for domestic violence against another alleged victim, but no formal charges were filed in that case, the prosecutor said.
