Father from rural Webb City faces child abuse charge

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Jasper County prosecutor has charged a rural Webb City man with felony child abuse for allegedly hitting his teenage son repeatedly with a wooden board.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Alexander S. Moore, 51, about six hours after the alleged abuse of his 15-year-old son Sunday afternoon at their home on Hedge Lane.

A probable-cause affidavit states that a witness told deputies that Moore chased the boy from their residence, hitting him four or five times with a board about 14 inches long and 1 or 2 inches wide. The blows reportedly left red marks on the teen’s cheek, upper arm, lower back and one of his thighs.

The father had left the residence by the time deputies arrived. He contacted the Jasper County sheriff’s office a few hours later and was arrested. He denied that he had struck the boy with the board anywhere other than on his buttocks, according to the affidavit. The boy told a deputy that his father was angry at him about some bicycle tires.
