Butte father pleads not guilty to killing child; remains jailed on $500k bond

A 32-year-old Butte man Thursday morning denied killing his infant daughter.

Matthew John Blaz pleaded not guilty to felony deliberate homicide in Butte district court.

Blaz is accused of causing the death of his 8-week-old daughter on Aug. 16. Blaz remains in jail on $500,000 bond. Although he appeared in court in street clothes, he was shackled.

An investigation launched after the baby’s death, which was originally reported as an accidental fall, found the infant died of abusive head trauma. Charging documents say Blaz was in sole custody of his daughter, Mattisyn Jolene Blaz, at the time of her death. Authorities believe the assault took place about 4 p.m. at Blaz’s home, 2017 S. Arizona St.

Later that day, Blaz was with the baby and her mother in a car at a local business parking lot when they called 911 to report the child wasn’t breathing. The couple was apparently trying to take the child to the hospital, authorities said.

If convicted of deliberate homicide, Blaz faces a sentence of life in prison or 10 to 100 years behind bars.
