Custodial dad pleads not guilty to torture of 5-year-old daughter (Bakersfield, California)

An earlier post clarifies that JOE JESSE BROWN is a custodial father, with the non-custodial mother living in Washington State. These abusers are blaming the mother--so predictable. Even though she's not around at all.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Bakersfield couple pleaded not guilty in a Kern County courtroom Wednesday to several abuse charges regarding their 5-year-old daughter.

The girl's father, Jesse Joe Brown, and her step-mother, Virginia Rodriguez, have been charged with several torture and cruelty charges.

Brown also faces one charge of attempted murder involving the girl, who at last check was listed in critical condition at a children's hospital in Madera.

Court documents obtained by Eyewitness News show that the couple admitted to "using shoe laces and ace bandages to tie the child's wrist and ankles to prevent her from wandering about the house at night."

A police report also involves the girl's doctor, who said the child had injuries consistent with "being bound for extended periods of time."

The doctor also indicated the 5-year-old had two brain bleeds, several bruises and "injuries consistent with cigarette burns."

The girl suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, after police were called to the couple's home on the 200 block of Cedar Street in central Bakersfield on Sunday.

Police were called to assist the girl with "medical aid," according to the report.

Brown is being held on $800,000 bail. Rodriguez's bail was set at $300,000.
