Yuma, Arizona - On March 29, 2014, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Yuma Regional Medical Center of a 3-month old infant that had been taken to YRMC by his father, Victor Cardenas, and his mother. The infant was being treated for severe head trauma.

During the initial investigation, Cardenas told Sheriff’s Office Investigators that he was walking with the infant in his arms when he tripped and fell on him causing the head injury. Cardenas stated that the infant had stopped breathing and that he did not call for medical assistance, but instead he had performed CPR on the infant. He also told Investigators that he had waited until the mother arrived home and she found the infant to be acting strangely, before they took him to YRMC.

The infant was flown to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he was evaluated by a medical team. The medical team later notified Sheriff’s Office Investigators that the infant’s head injuries could not have been caused during a fall from an average adult or from the body weight of another person falling on top of him. The medical team explained that the infant’s injuries were consistent with moving the infant from one position to another using extreme force.

On May 8, 2014, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested Victor Cardenas, 18 years of age, of Yuma, at his home in the 800 block of South Myrtle Avenue. He was booked on charges of Child Abuse, Aggravated Assault and Endangerment.
