A 74-YEAR-OLD father has been handed one of the longest jail sentences ever imposed in NSW for historical child sexual assault — but still blames the daughter who was his victim.

Geoffrey Woodward, who put his daughter on the contraceptive pill at age of 13, told psychologists he “only had sex with his daughter” and could not understand why she had not forgiven him, the District Court was told.

His daughter, 52, who was raped by him many times between the ages of 10 and 13 until her mother divorced him, has consented to her father’s identity being revealed because she has not used the same surname for years.

“It is difficult to comprehend such brutal and degrading treatment by a father towards his young daughter,” Judge Paul Conlon said, jailing the man for a total of 18 years.

“It has taken some time but the community’s attitude to child sex offences has changed as the long-term impact of such offences on the victims has become recognised and understood.

“In her statement (Miss A) has referred to the pain, self-hatred and loathing that has consumed her over the years.”

The judge said the woman, who was raped vaginally and anally by her father, had wanted to die, saying to herself: “Please death, please come.”

Sentences for historical child sexual assault are regularly criticised for not being tough because the law requires the offenders to be jailed commensurate with the sentences of the time of the offence, which were far shorter than they are now.

Judge Conlon jailed Woodward, a former army sergeant, for six years on each of five counts of rape and seven years for what was then called buggery.

He imposed an aggregate sentence of 18 years to “reflect the total criminality of the offender”.

Woodward, who pleaded guilty to the offences, which were representative of a wider range of conduct, will serve a minimum term of at least nine years.

Judge Conlon said he was aware Woodward, who has no previous convictions, may die in jail.

“However there is no automatic reduction because of advanced age,” Judge Conlon said.
